Tip #47. No Snooze Ever!

Added: 1/26/2011 7:44:38 AM

This advice on how to get up early comes from Ralph Jean-Paul as found on his Potential2Success blog. “One of the rules I put into place for my experiment was the rule that I could not use the snooze button, ever! When you hit the snooze on your alarm you are allowing your mind to wake up gradually. This may slow down your productivity and energy…” – writes Ralph.

I have adapted this advice from Ralph for a bit different reason, but it still works for me just fine… First, when you’re snoozing you're stealing valuable moments of quality sleep. You neither get up nor get good sleep, so you don’t get much out of it. Second, if you hit snooze button once, there is a big temptation to do it twice, three times and so on. I remember few times being late simply because I “oversnoozed”… If you get used to snooze, you may even start pressing it automatically without completely getting out of sleep. Result is that once you wake up you may not even remember when and how many times you hit that snooze button. I remember I used several alarm clocks on my iPhone which worked just like snooze – I would put them with 5-10 min intervals and, oh my, I would never get up after first alarm! Because I knew there will be another one coming soon and I have got five more minutes to stay in warm bed… Heh, not anymore! Now, knowing there is no any “backup” and no snooze, I would wake up and get off the bed immediately! So try it – No Snooze, Ever!

P.s. Head to Ralph’s site to read more about his interesting sleeping experiments.

Jep thank you for the tip, but my biggest problem is that I know I need to get up, but I hit the snooze button anyway, because the half sleep, half awake state of mind is just so comfortable.

I agree with the no snoozing but it is such a temptation on a cold dark morning. I find if I get up and go for a walk I really do achieve more in that day. I also found when I did hit that snooze button I ended up oversleeping and then was late for everything else in the day.

I know for 2011 I will be making an effort to not hit that button and go for that walk for my own health and to start my day off feeling more alert. Thanks for your post I am glad we both feel the same way.

I agree with Paulineh. No snoozing is indeed a good idea but when you're on that cold dark morning, you can't actually resist giving in to that relief of sleeping again or oversleeping. It is such an agony. But, well, I'll try it next time not snooze and get up early. Thanks for the tip.

I tried that, but gave into the temptation when I was really tired.
I'm going to try putting the clock where I can't reach it unless I get out of bed.

I read of a engineering student that created a clock that would roll off the nightstand and around the room to force him to get up. LOL

Now that's true cold turkey, never, ever, again using snooze. How many people will succeed at that. Very good advice, getting up right away usually proves to be the best thing to do.

I keep my alarm clock on the far end of the room so I have to get out of bed to turn it off. I found that helps because you're already up and moving. If all else fails, I have a 2 year old that's probably the best alarm clock out there.

I couldn't agree more with Ralph. I stopped using the snooze on my alarm back in college and it did wonders for both my quality of sleep in the morning hours and my ability to get up when the alarm went off. Now, I'm like a Pavlovian dog. As soon as the alarm goes off I'm headed for breakfast. Oh, and like John I have a 2 year old as well that serves as a backup - just in case.
Russell Davison says:

I position the alarm clock so that I can't hit the snooze button easily. I do this because, whilst snoozing, I would shower and drive to work. However, 15 minutes later I'd discover that It was a dream and I was now late for work.

I have to admit to falling victim to that tempting snooze button on more than one occasion, myself. It is so hard not to try to work in those extra few minutes, but what I find is that they never turn out to be restful because I just lay there and wait for the next alarm to go off. Much better off to just go ahead and get up and quit delaying the inevitable.

I couldn't agree more with stopping the use of the snooze button. I have tried this and found that throughout the day i feel much sharper and lose energy less quickly. I also found that when i wake up if automatically in my mind i begin to plan my day i find that my productivity improves although this may not be the case for everyone.

The best part is when you can train yourself to automatically get up early by yourself each day....without using any clock at all!

You don't have to worry about hitting the snooze button then....because there is no snooze button!

I have to agree. The snooze button truly is a dangerous beast. I try my best to resist but I must confess that a least once a week I give into temptation and always regret it! The best thing is just to throw yourself out of bed (literally), it's the only way to wake me up some mornings. Soon as I hit the floor i'm awake and occasionally slightly bruised!!

The simple advice offered on this website about sleep is very important to emphasize in our "24/7" culture which seems to reward obsessive and unhealthy behaviors like "pulling an all-nighter."

Instead of getting proper sleep, our Western society has decided, instead, to find new and stronger energy drinks to keep us awake. This trend is very dangerous.

About not hitting "snooze," I found that it's much less tempting when you actually go to bed early the night before. It's great to wake up and feel completely refreshed when the alarm goes off.

What's even better is to wake up without the alarm!

Yes!! I totally agree with the "oversnoozing" thing. Your body starts to adapt and turns on the autopilot, so I've had times where I've snoozed and not even realized it. Bad habit to start. Slight plug...that's why I made an iPhone alarm app that doesn't let you snooze. If you're curious to check it out, it's called Morning Worm. My little blog I keep about it is www.themorningworm.com.

For everyone out there, definitely learn to stop snoozing!

Time management and sleep problems are seems to be big obstacles for a lot of folks.

We'll never be able to conquer both until we learn "NO." We need to tell ourselves, "no." No, we can't do everything. No, we can't go to every event. No, we're not meant to stay up for 48 hours at a time. It takes a little humility.

I despise having to wake up by an alarm. I view alarm clocks as traumatic. It's like going into shock every day. I like your site. Any tips that make waking up earlier are very welcome. One tip I've found is working out regularly because this helps me get to sleep on time consistently. When I go to sleep at the same time and early enough, I wake up before the dreadful alarm clock goes off.

That said, if you don't preempt the alarm clock, playing the snooze game is like being shocked over and over. To be avoided if at all possible.

Nice to see that the website is back. Out of all the tips you have given, this is the most important one.
I don't know how many times i thought "Oh i can snooze just 5 minutes". Then ofcourse i fell so hard asleep that i compleatly ignored the clock.

If I could give my own advice on how to wake up early it would be to exercise on a regular basis. This advice is not as simple as many others, but guarateed the best one. When you are fit, you both had a better sleep, and have energy to have a great day. Day after day.

I have to disagree with the no-snooze tip, even though there is some logic in it. I have to get up gradually. After every snooze I am more and more awake, and finally I wake up about a minute BEFORE the last alarm. If I wake up early and at once - wothout snoozing, I feel I am tired during the day. Sometimes I also have hickups if I wake up too fast...

In my opinion one of the best things you can do for your health in general and your sleep in specific is to keep your window slightly open during the night. This has two benefits.
Firstly, the gap in the window will allow poisonous carbon dioxide to float away. The reason the human body breathes out is because carbon dioxide is poisonous. And during the night you take a heck of a lot of breaths and your room fills up with this gas. Let it out the window.

The second reason is that you need to allow new oxygen to float in. This might also help you regulate the temperature of the room.

I fully agree with your no snooze theory. I have tried and tested that method many times and I keep coming back with the same result, and that is that by jumping straight out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off ensures I am ready and on the go in a much spedier way than when I hit snooze. Snooze simply makes me slow and always late for work!

I hate my snooze buttom on the clock but at the same time can't live without it. I hit it every 5 minutes and can't get up. It's really a problem for me.

Thx for your post.

I put my iPhone by the door of my bathroom. So in order for me to slide the snooze, I will have to get up and walk toward my bathroom.
