Tip #19. Put Your Alarm Clock Far Enough From Your Bed

Added: 7/11/2007 12:39:14 AM

It’s simple advice yet many people don’t use it. They keep turning alarm off while being semi-asleep and then wonder how come they couldn’t wake up and missed an alarm... All you need is to put your alarm clock far enough to make you stand up and make few steps away from the bed to turn it off. I’ve used this approach successfully for few days until I found myself... walking back to the bed and falling asleep for one more hour! If this happens to you, here is what you should do. This tip works great in pair with another tip – GTD For Early Risers. I found that if I have something else to do after turning off alarm clock, I’m likely to go and do it, because the first and most challenging task – getting out of the bed – is already done. So I’ve built small morning ritual to follow, but it all starts with turning off alarm which is in the opposite corner of my bedroom.

Having alarm sound further away has additional benefit. You should avoid putting buzzing alarm clock right near your bed when you sleep because abrupt awakening is generally not a good thing for your health, and having alarm clock 10 feet away will make your awakening less stressful.

I have several alarm clocks, all far away from my bed, a few on the computer behind passwords I have to type in and I still go back to bed. Something tells me that it's not the alarm's fault though. haha

I had the same problem as Ryan (though never used clocks with passwords) I help over come this I would move the clock around, so I had to find it first.

I have a BIG problem of going back to bed after my alarm goes off, even when I make myself get up and walk to turn it off. But, I really like the idea of doing something else after turning off my alarm and starting a routine. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the tips!

I had my alarm clock on my dresser across the room for the longest time, but I just got really good at walking across the room with my eyes closed to hit snooze!

I have always had this problem. I used to set 4 alarms at one point but nothing would stop me from going back to bed. Around 1 month ago I purchased a 'Philips Wakeup light'. It's a 'alarm' which wakes you up with light instead of sound. It really works I now can get up within 10 mins of waking up and I have not 'snoozed' it once!

What I have found works well for me (I often simply turn it off and go back to bed) is simply to have a pitcher of water on the stand where the alarm is, and get a drink before going back to bed. If youre even a little bit dehydrated (and most people don't drink enough water), this can wake you up quite a bit.

You might even go lie back down again, but it might be that you arent groggy-sleepy, and get out of bed 2 minutes later without having to force yourself out. Or, after having the drink, you might find that you simply arent that sleepy anymore.

I actually do this. I have three alarms. My phone and two clocks. I put the two clocks away from me so I really have to stand up.

I actually do this, I put my phone at a distance where I know I have to get out of bed and i've found that when i get straight up i feel much better throughout the day.

I do this as well but it can sometimes put me in a real bad mood trying to get hold of the phone - I must admit clocks with passwords is new to me!

When I lived in an apartment several years ago I woke up early with my neighbor everyday. I say this because we shared bedroom walls and they were paper thin. His alarm clock went off two hours before mine did and I could never go back to sleep. He kept is across the room too because I could hear him walk over and hit snooze. I swear I was up before he was and he's the one with the alarm. Thanks to my new apartment I don't have to go through that anymore.

I tried this yesterday and put my phone on the dresser and my alarm clock on my vanity. I woke up at 5am! This works. I will move my clock around often so it can be harder to find it.

It works, it works ! I usually don't need an alarm to wake up, but I go to sleep very late and I have to wake up in the dawn, I set my alarm clock which is pretty far away from my bed. So I have to get up and take some steps until I get to it. This helps me a lot ! Yous should try !

maybe this is the easiest tip I read, putting alarm clock far from my bed and so putting it in a box with lock...That way, after opening that alarm clock maybe I'm too awake and ready to start my day!
Thanks for the blog!

I have problems also with those alarm clocks. I use to turn them off just after they ring, and fall asleep again. What I do is placing the alarm under the bed, like this I can't turn it off witohut waking up ;)
