Tip #45. Sometimes it doesn’t work

Added: 2/20/2008 9:45:12 PM

Haven’t seen any posts here for a while? It’s because waking up early sometimes, well, doesn’t work . I had to work late on pretty much every day over last couple of months and this completely screwed up my wake up schedule. And since I was mostly writing my posts early in the morning, this schedule change has put my blogging on hold for a while.

Work schedule is one common reason why you may never become an early riser, and there are others. Some people are simply born to never become an early riser. If you struggle to wake up early, if you do not enjoy it – then let’s face the truth – it might be not for you. And if you keep struggling, it may even be harmful. There is a great post on this subject by Clay on his The Growing Life blog - Healthy, Wealthy, and DEAD?: 5 Reasons Why Getting Up Early Might be Harmful. I really appreciate Clay showing the other side of the coin. I do realize though, that many will gladly use it as an excuse to quit early rising. Well, I never said it’s going to be an easy journey ...

So here is my tip. If waking up early doesn't work for you, don't worry. Take a break. There were many times in my life when I didn't feel like getting up early and I took a break from it. Listen to you body. Try it at some other time. Try it using some different techniques. And remember - you, your mind, your body should enjoy it. If it doesn't feel that way now - find something else which does, and come back to this site at some time in the future. Good luck!

Sorry to hear the early rising isn't going well for you right now.

Even if you come to the conclusion that you're happier not waking up early, the site has done a lot of good and I'm sure there are many other readers who feel the same way I do.

This site gave me the push I needed to start waking up early and that has completely changed my life for the better. On behalf of everyone who has benefited from the site: THANK YOU for taking the time to put it together!

Adam

This is a good site which has helped a lot of people achieve their goals. Thank you for your good work, and also for allowing me to provide an alternate perspective (which is on the other side of the making-life-work-for-you coin .

Warm regards,

Gosh I have reaped some benefits from waking up early. You really seem to think clearly then but I just can't seem to deal with your earlier tip about going to bed early. I just love staying up late. I seem to have so much energy in the nights. I guess I am a night person.

Happy to know at very late night that you blog on 'waking up early'. Yes, of course, for someone, for example - me, it can be not only a difficult but a harmful initiative. Thanks! this tip has made my night. Now i can go to bed and wake up late, may be by noon!

How early is early? Are you talking like 5 am? 6 am? I agree, having a full time job is one reason you may not be an early riser. But also not having a job could be a reason too--no set schedule.
Sarge says:

Get out of bed you pathetic pansy! I won't hear any more of your excuses! Boo hoo hoo, you broke the link on your calendar, boo hoo. Stop crying and making excuses and start a new link. You make me sick. Tip #46-- join the military and you'll be an early riser for the rest of your life.

All that money wasted on those gagets, all your time wasted writing this blog, all those mornings wasted. All those days you could have stayed in bed but didn't---now it doesn't matter.

Healthy, Wealthy and DEAD?? Sounds like another excuse to me. Afterall, you can sleep plenty when you DIE so you might as well be awake while you're alive.

Enough excuses, get your sorry weak-willed sack of a self out of bed.

Great post... I work every morning at 10 but every tuesday I go to an entrepreneur meeting at 7. Its completely brutal - and I used to get up at 430 to go to work, and I was completely fine. I thinks its all about the habit.

It only seems tough to wake up early monday through friday. Going to a job you dread will invoke this of course. Doing something you have passion about will get ya out of bed bright and early.

It's good to know that you are human like the rest of us-I always mean to do better than I actually do-guess we all just keep going back to square one and starting again, right?

This problem is very common with me not only during my days of job but was also there when I was a student. Since I was a science student I had to study till late night and hence had great difficulty in getting up in the morning.

Great post! I think it's more about habit. However, make sure sleeping enough is also very important. Don't try to wake up early by having just 3 hours sleep. Waking up in such way will do more harm than good.
Elliott Russell says:

I feel the same. I often work nights and there is little chance of me getting up before 3pm :P

That said, i have always had a hard time getting up early, even in the army :P and when i do - it is difficult to say the least.

I'm sorry to say that early rising is not working for you. But rising up early is good for health and also we feel fresh and can work out properly.

I have just changed work shifts. I'm working nights now with my daily schedule starting at 10pm. So far waking up early is no longer a problem. lol. However the trick now is getting enough sleep. I'm not sure how this would hold up in the long run though.

Yes, its surely right that too much of work load often hinders with the wake up schedule and can also become a health hazard.

Ha.. if you want break the wake-up-late-cycle by starting to take a melatonin every night. I always use them when I travel and get jetlag... so they work quite well.

How do you ever break the cycle of hitting that snooze button?????
I have good intentions every night of getting up early, but you know what they say about good intentions! I even envision myself getting a little work out in, not being rushed, riding my bike to work in stead of having to catch a ride with my mate (cuz i woke up late) but nothing seems to work. I'd love to be a morning person. How does one change??

I think the key is waking up at the same time even on weekends. I think I read it here earlier and have stuck with it for about two months. I find I'm working earlier and getting more done and far more productive. Even if I end up out late I still set the alarm for the same time. All it does is force me to bed earlier the next night.

I stumbled upon this blog by accident pretty much but as soon as I saw the title I was glad I did. Been night person pretty much all of my life and feeling rather grumpy and slow in the morning worked fine for a while while in school and uni, as it was compensated by late nights. But for a while now I simply having more and more trouble keeping up with the lack of sleep(might be the age) and I'm trying to kinda reverse my sleeping pattern with not so good results. Tried some of the recommendations on my own but it feels good to be able to learn from experience of others on blog like this.

I just found your blog, and I gotta say, its great. I have recently found myself in a schedule of working 9 to 10 hours a day, going home to play games, hitting the sheets at midnight, and originally waking up at 8. Now I spend time to check out blogs in the morning, and its been cutting into my morning time. I'll have to start focusing more on your site, trying to fit in the time for you steps. Thanks a lot.

Erin says:

It does work, you just have to stay with it. It takes about 20 days to form or break a habit and sleeping/waking is no different.

I'm sorry to hear that early rising is not working for you. But waking up early is really good for health and also our work schedule will start in a better way. The early we rise the early we go to bed. If we wake up early, we do our work with fresh mind and get relaxed and go to bed early

Of course, it's all about work and school. Those are the reasons why we wake up early. I myself posted a tip on my site on how to wake up early. All need is an alarm clock and a food cover that has small holes. cover the alarm clock so you will not accidentally or unconsciously turn it off.

I wish I could be more of an early riser. Unfortunately I am a night owl by nature, I just don't like going to bed ;-) Regardless it is one of my goals to improve my sleep patterns. That and go for a bike ride every morning before work.

If I am on a day schedule and can go to bed at at reasonable hour I will be an early riser. If I work at night my time is adjusted but I still get up early for work and do the same routine just at a different time.Anyways...great post...i loved it!!

Can't say I haven't heard this before. But I have definitely heard about the health dangers about being up at night and how unnatural it is for the human body to do. Takes years off your life and leads to other health issues. Think I read that graveyard shift workers have about 10 years less life expectancy than day workers.

Been on nights nearly ten years here. Lately I feel like I'm always tired. Can't get enough sleep. While at work I am fine but as soon as I get home or sit for a while, I immediately start dozing off. Can't even read a book, I only make it one or two pages. Some people can't fall asleep, I love sleeping.

Nice hub dude. I learned a lot and realized that I'm not an early riser because I'm doing lot of works at night.

I also have a heavy work schedule, but find keeping fit i.e. excercise before work and shower really wakes me up and prepares me for the day.
